Speculative phrenology of solipsism

Solipsism syndrome refers to a psychological state in which a person feels that the world is not external to his or her mind. Periods of extended isolation may predispose people to this condition. In particular, the syndrome has been identified as a potential concern for individuals living in outer space for extended periods of time. [Ed: Note the common term “space cadet” for highly intelligent people on the spectrum.]

Infogalactic

I’m going to show how much I believe each of the edenic phrenology traits contribute to this psychological tendency. Please note that I’ll be treating solipsism as a spectrum here, not as a categorical syndrome. Although it’s difficult to guess what the shape of this frequency distribution would be, I’ll be arbitrarily using a standard deviation of 15 points by analogy to IQ, because most of us have a good feel for the IQ distribution. But in reality, I’m just using handwavy numbers to express the feeling of “bigness” that my intuition assigns to these traits. We also assume, generally, that a phrenology trait on a spectrum will have opposite psychological effects on the ends of the spectrum (e.g. big occipital is solipsistic, small occipital is empirical).

I repeat: these are guesses.

-15 Big parietal lobe
+8 Big occipital lobe
+10 Big temporal lobes
+10 En bombe
+-0 High forehead
+5 Broad forehead
-5 Large eyes
-15 Wider spacing between eyes
-5 Symmetrical eyes
+8 Deep sockets
+-0 Recessed periorbital sockets
+5 Absence of eye flanges
-10 High testosterone
-10 Wide face
-5 Long face
+-0 Thin face
+-0 Vertically compressed face
+5 Thal lower face
-5 Vertical forehead
+10 High digit ratio
-5 Large hands
+15 Ectomorphism

What about the different brands of solipsism? A deep thal, a typical female and a narcissist aren’t solipsistic in the same way. Or is this specifically about the “purest” and most fundamental philosophical solipsism outlined in the starting quote?

Secondly, what about the person’s colouring/skin/texture? I don’t mean only tone but everything that’s laid over their facial features, so something like tone, smoothness, leanness, eyebrows, dark circles and possibly also eyes/gaze. I also suppose you are familiar with how introverts and extraverts have different looking faces [https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/10/the-introverted-face/381697/], which is pretty self-explanatory in the light of that Musings on Mormonism article and the effect that constant socializing/external focus has on facial motor neuron activation. Put together these have led me to think that a certain facial overlay is more important for endogenous personality proper than just deepsock. I also have a half-baked theory that could explain the often mentioned childlike physiognomy that many geniuses are said to have, but it’s at best based on fuzzy correlations and for example you are a counterexample (goodtest).

Anecdotal tangent: I’ve seen some people with distinctly TT physiognomy but with those aforementioned features looking very cro-mag/genpop-like. No deep/haunted/inquisitive/lively eyes either. Were they some average IQ throwbacks that had mostly inherited physical traits?

There’s a difference between experiential solipsism (Depersonalization / Derealization) and moral solipsism (narcissism), although they probably overlap.

This is about what they all have in common, psychologically. How this interacts with philosophy is unknown, but it’s reasonable to expect that psychologically solipsistic people will tend to become philosophical solipsists, and vice versa.

      >Secondly, what about the person’s colouring/skin/texture? I don’t mean only tone but everything that’s laid over their facial features, so something like tone, smoothness, leanness, eyebrows, dark circles and possibly also eyes/gaze.

We concern ourselves primarily with bone traits over soft tissue because anthropology, although I’m sure you can draw some psychological inferences from some soft tissue traits. It seems reasonable to assume that bone traits correspond more to nature and soft tissue traits correspond more to nurture (perhaps less so in the latter case).

I think I saw that a while back but I’d forgotten about it, thanks for linking.

On the contrary, I originally grew my beard so people would stop asking how old I am. I kept it because it’s a good look for me. It appears this childlike quality of the face is independent of my high-testosterone facial features, rather than being simple neoteny.

When I first started face-reading I ran into the same issue, and I believe it’s due to Memoire and Nottuh’s bugbear–we put too much emphasis on relative measurements over absolute measurements. Nottuh’s perspective on this is that Europeans fall on a spectrum between the Mediterranean race (small absolute head and facial dimensions) and the highly neanderthal-influenced Brunn race (large absolute head and facial dimensions). So, we should add “large head” to all edenic type requirements.

A small correction: I think the main spectrum among Europeans is a Mediterranean-Alpine spectrum (Mediterranean being narrow-headed and faced, Alpine [relatively] wide on both). Brunn could be thought of as an end to a different axis of a spectrum that Europeans fall on. I think there are also axes that have Mongoloid and Negroid ends that Europeans fall on as well, but those are of less significance (excluding outliers).

Listening to a Daniel Dennett talk just now – he mentions that autistics have abnormal saccadic movements. Fascinating…

Vox’s post today (surreptitiously about his new comics) is a great example of what a knobhead he is, and his narcissism and solipsism.

Loads of bragging about himself (his past self), how fit he was, fights he won, a couple of (very old) photos of him showing how ripped he was.

Yet we all know he’s a fat old dude now.

And is there anything less manly than bragging about oneself? (Maybe inserting one’s face into photos of your surroundings, called selfies I think).
