H/T Vox for quoting this Dave Barry article reviewing 2017. There is a common element in these two news stories:
Nobody seems to know how, specifically, the Russians affected the election, but everybody is pretty sure they did something, especially CNN, which has not been so excited about a story since those heady months in 2014 when it provided 24/7 video coverage of random objects floating in the Pacific while panels of experts speculated on whether those objects might or might not have anything to do with that missing Malaysian airliner. You can tune in to CNN any time, day or night, and you are virtually guaranteed to hear the word “Russians” within 10 seconds, even if it’s during a Depends commercial.

Russia Mania, covfefe and the Category 5 weirdness of 2017
It strikes me how masturbatory both of these news cycles have been. In both cases we see the media flexing every last sinew of its narrative control, every moment of 24/7 coverage, reporting on…nothing. They are trying to create reality by reporting on reporting itself, as if propaganda were a Philosopher’s Stone. Can you imagine how heady that must be? This is narcissism on an institutional scale, squeezing every ounce of form to do the exact opposite of the form’s supposed function…to report facts.
Are we really surprised that the people who run this shitshow feel compelled to jerk off in front of people? It’s the same freakin’ thing.
