Discord discussion re: Christian pacifism

In retrospect I’d modify the statement that “all” situations can be traced to decisions we made previously, and the statement that “violence against innocents is out in both testaments” needs some qualifications and unpacking. But otherwise, this was pretty good stuff.

If you guys split your enemies as well as you split hairs, the West would be free of invaders in a fort night. Buy a gun and be ready to use it!

Jesus did not rebuke the disciple that cut off the priests ear. He simply healed the priest. He rebuked the priests for arresting him in the middle of the night instead of in the temple.

The arguments for pacifism and what I’ve called “radical nonjudgmentalism” are basically interchangeable, so if you can deconstruct one you can deconstruct the other. It ultimately boils down to tactical nihilism and an unwillingness to take responsibility for one’s own actions.

Why did you do X? Because God wanted me to.
Why didn’t you do Y? Because if God wanted it to happen he would have done it himself.
      Ad nauseum.

You are right in that they are two symptoms of the same philosophical disease. The non-judgmental thing is infuriating. As Paul reminded us, we are going to be judging angels, don’t you think that we can at least get to “sodomy is wrong?”
