What the original artist got right was that we’d be living in tightly packed, hermetically sealed bubble worlds of marketing and consumerism. What they got wrong was the bubbles turned out to be DIY*, and the bright neon lights are inside people’s heads as the world around us becomes increasingly brutalist and dreary.
*Covid put the lie to our manufacturing capabilities even given the most perfect capitalist incentives of all history. Imagine being able to make billions by attaching two strings to a piece of paper, and being unable to do it after three months, and still calling yourself a manufacturing company. Think about it: 300 million panicked customers who can’t *not* buy your paper product in the middle of an anti-Chinese patriotic frenzy. Hipster handmade designs all over the internet. Still couldn’t do it.
