Not really. I tried putting a scenery description from a book in, it did pretty good with that. I don’t see much use for it tbh. Maybe it shaves time off if you’re a pro, but I can’t imagine being happy with the output. It’s already good at writing reports (and op-eds, see https://www.unz.com/isteve/chatgpt-writes-an-intersectional-op-ed-about-hair-touching/). But how much time does that actually save me if I’m trying to write something good, useful, etc? Something to turn in for school, sure, whatever. But that’s only satisfying because I don’t give a shit.
So what we have here is a machine that produces unlimited quantities of shit commissioned by people who don’t give a shit about what comes out, in the hopes that other people will care about it for lack of taste. That sounds like a recipe for a worse world. Not that anyone appears to care about making the world worse, I’m just saying. How many times is it going to write something I wish I had written, and then I feel…proud? How many times is it going to write an important report that I can then trust, but I also can’t look up that a human has written?
E.g. Siri, how do I cure cancer?
Siri: Ivermectin.

I’m imagining hundreds of millions of people each writing thousands of books by automatically generating them from prompts, and calling themselves prolific authors. That’s the dumbest possible world in so many ways.
There’s an old philosophical problem in math about the use of computers in proofs: “If a computer proves a theorem but no human can understand it, is it proven?” In the end the answer is no, because proofs aren’t objective. They’re arguments/explanations between humans to inspire understanding of a thing. It took me a while to get used to that idea because we’re inclined to think of everything under the banner of “math” as objective truth, 2 + 2 = 4 type stuff. But the fact of the matter is, regardless of the objectivity of the theorem itself (and even assuming it’s perfectly and precisely formulated in human language…which is a rabbithole of its own), a mathematical proof has more in common with an essay or a legal defense than it does with the automatic operation of the physical laws of the universe.
And when it comes to art, I’ll grant that computers can do 1 to N just fine. It’s why they exist. But they can’t do 0 to 1. (ref. Thiel) My distaste for this tool is ultimately driven by my distaste for people who worship the former and think they’re doing the latter, which is MY schtick. The problem is you can make a lot of money doing 1 to N, and that goes straight to people’s heads. You can’t reason with someone who’s high on the hog, not even one time. So while AI can technically do art, according to my own definition, it’s only because the audience is broken.

I disagree, real advances in automation have halted and are going backward. What you’re describing is a potential problem, in theory, for a future civilization. All these reports of technological advancements in the modern day are fake breakthroughs for pumping up stock prices. AI can’t do programming jobs anymore than offshore Indians can…what actually happens is *pretend* coding and the CEO pockets the first quarter labor savings, then the planes crash because nobody actually coded. I’m 99% sure it’s divinely inspired Bible because the canon is pretty solid AFAICT, and my real doubts re: canonicity are focused on a couple of the books toward the end of the Old Testament.
Saying whether or not I “believe” the contents is tricky because it’s hard to define what we’d mean by believing an allegory, and Revelations is filled with nonliteral events.

It didn’t even literally happen at the time it was recorded, it was mostly a vision of future events. The few literal parts, like John being on the island of Patmos, yes I take those literally. And yes, I believe John literally saw what he wrote down, and I believe he wrote it down as well as he could have managed. For example, he says “something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea” which could refer to an explosion or a meteor, but he would have no reference for what those would be.
If it is ‘free money zero interest rates’ again then yeah, its just grift grifit grift. So we will see what happens in 2023- and try to gauge how ‘multi-polarity’ fits into ‘the show’.

I see AI as the natural evolution of digital art. Digital art always occurred to me as being at a remove from the intimacy between an artist and their medium. It’s a sterile interface. Analog infinities of raw material espression reduced to discrete pixels of static information. Analog art has a life to it. It’s imbued with and born from the energies of the world.
AI will never be able to create analog art. Even if you hooked one up to an animatronic painting apparatus all you would end up with is essentially just a print.
